What Have We Become...

MTV's Jersey Shore, portrays the "real life" of New Jersey kids living together on the Jersey Shore coastline.  However, their life is far from real.  This clip shows the three main male characters partying at a bar and bringing young women back to their house.  The biggest problem, in the guys' minds, are that there are three of them and only two girls, thus to quote Mike “The Situation”, “Someone's gotta make something happen".  In reality, not many women would degrade themselves to this level for any average guys in a bar.  As seen in the first three seconds, girls are willing to dance provocatively to get them noticed, not only to the Jersey boys, but for the cameras as well.  It is said that television is stereotyping women by creating a male-centered environment, however, it seems to be that women would degrade themselves for their fifteen minutes of fame.  As a result of the women's behavior, society sees this as the norm.  Several years ago, the actions both these women and male actors would be appalling to audiences across the nation.

When one signs on to be a cast member of MTV's Real World, they are allowing the nation not only to view the challenges but their day-to-day life as well, whether it be good or bad.  It seems to be that more of the bad behavior is shown because that is the most entertaining to audiences.  As seen above, cast member Brad starts off as a happy, laughing guy to becoming an angered maniac.  After realizing he was the recipient of an atomic wedgie, he goes on a drunken rampage.  This situation is ideal for ratings, but I doubt Brad was proud of his actions the next day.

Jersey Shore is notorious for partying, binge drinking, and sexual behavior.  This clip takes it to the next level.  After Nicole, a.k.a. "Snookie", verbally attacks a man at the bar for stealing her drinks, the man then proceeds to punch her straight in the face.  The consequences of this man's actions are clearly shown when the police arrest him in the full episode.  However, some questions arise from this incident.  Does it make it okay to hit a woman because it was shown on TV?  Are young boys going to believe this is the norm?  The answer is obviously no, but young children watching these shows may not know the difference.
